From 26 to 27 July 2017, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) first International Conference on Aerospace System Science and Engineering (ICASSE 2017) was successfully held in Shanghai. The topic of the conference was "System Science and Aerospace Innovation". 4 sessions are arranged in the conference, which are “Aerospace System”, “Information and Science”, “Fluid Dynamics and Propulsion” and “Space Technology”. The four sessions include main research directions in aerospace system field. The conference is hosted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, organized by School of Aeronautics and Astronautics (SAA) of SJTU. It is also greatly supported by University of Toronto and Moscow Aviation Institute.

The conference aims to strengthen academic exchanges in the aerospace systems science and engineering field and to promote cooperation between international and domestic universities and scientific research institutes. A total of 41 articles are received from the conference. They come from Canada, the United States, Russia, Germany, France, Belgium, Pakistan and China's universities and scientific research units. 35 authors presented their work in the conference and hundreds of experts and scholars did academic communication at the meeting.

The conference was hosted by Prof. Lu Ping, chairman of the Program Committee, director of the Aerospace Department of the University of San Diego State and director of the AIAA JGCD Journal. Prof. Jing Zhongliang, chairman of the Organizing Committee, associate dean of SJTU SAA, delivered a welcoming speech on behalf of the organizer. In order to encourage young scholars to actively participate in scientific research, the Organizing Committee established "Best Student Paper Award". Professor Lu Ping and Professor Jing Zhongliang present the prize to the award-winners Ji Yuan, Fu Yi, Ning Zi’an and took photos.

There are 7 keynote speechs: Prof. Lu's“Computational Guidance and Control”, Prof. Henry Leung’s “Information Fusion and Sensor Network Surveillance”, Prof. George Zhu’s“Mission Design of Deorbiting Spacecraft Using Electrodynamic Tethers(DESCENT)”, Prof. Tom Shih’s“Challenges in Designing Gas-Turbine Cooling System”, Prof. Guangjun Liu’s“Development of Modular and Reconfigurable Robot with Multiple Working Modes”, One Web CEO Mr. Greg Wyler’s“Enabling Internet Access for All”and Prof. Christopher Damaren’s “Optimal Control of Hybrid Aerospace System”. They caused a heated discussion of the attendees. In addition, Professor Dmitry Yu Strelets from Moscow Aviation Institute, Prof. Christophe Baehr from the National Meteorological Center of France, Professor Klaus Schilling of the University of Würzburg, Prof. Wu Shufan from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Professor Lu Bei, Professor Xiao Gang and other teachers and students also gave wonderful reports. The conference has a strong academic atmosphere and an active interaction.

Finally, associate dean of SJTU SAA, Prof. Zhan Xingqun, hosted the closing ceremony of ICASSE 2017. The conference is the first international academic conference hosted by SJTU SAA, and the next conference will be held in Moscow. At the same time, the first international academic journal is established.
